Media Coverage

Since its launch, the Solving-FCB Partnership has attracted substantial media attention, helping to amplify the partnership’s research impact across academic, policy, and public audiences. Over 180 media stories, interviews, and articles have featured Solving-FCB research or researchers since the partnership began. The coverage is across more than 10 countries, including Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, China and countries in West Africa and Latin America. Solving-FCB work has been featured in major platforms. The media coverages have highlighted regional Solving-FCB projects, including seafood security work with the Tla’amin Nation (Canada), sustainable fisheries strategies in Costa Rica, and climate-resilient food systems in West Africa. Several research outputs on climate adaptation, basic income for sustainability, and ocean governance have been cited in policy-oriented publications and science-policy briefings reported in the media. Additional Information

Accepted official (blue zone) side events in United Nations Ocean Conference, Nice, June 2025

Side event: Small but powerful: harnessing the diversity of small-scale fisheries to solve the sustainability challenges at the food-climate-biodiversity nexus

Organizing partners: The University of British Columbia (Lead organizer), CIMAR (Research Center of Marine Science and Limnology/Centro de Investigación en Ciencias del Mar y Limnología, University of Costa Rica), MarViva, Xiamen University

Description: We focus on the vital role of sustainable small-scale fisheries (SSF) in achieving desirable ocean futures, including food security, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and biodiversity conservation. Panelists including Drs. David Obura (IPBES), Katherine Arroyo-Arce (MarViva), Charlotte De Fontaubert (World Bank) and William Cheung (UBC) will discuss how governance, science and technology, finance, and civil society can leverage the multidimensional values and diversity of small-scale seafood producers to support SDG 14 and beyond. Presenters from the international interdisciplinary partnership, “Solving the Sustainability Challenges at the Food-Climate-Biodiversity Nexus” (Solving-FCB), will share perspectives on SSF from across case studies in Costa Rica, China and West Africa.

The side event will highlight outcomes from the Solving-FCB Partnership, which investigates various communities of ocean action such as marine and coastal ecosystems management, sustainable fisheries and the Blue Economy. We will announce our commitment to advancing this partnership as part of the Voluntary Ocean Commitments, reinforcing our dedication to sustainable ocean management and conservation. Presenters will discuss the relationship between small-scale fisheries, in diverse geographic contexts, and cross-cutting ocean-climate-biodiversity issues that link with targets for SDG 14, as well as SDGs 1, 2 and 13. These linkages include reducing pollution, eliminating IUU fishing and exploring Nature-Based Solutions. Read more at solvingfcb.org/about/goals-objectives

Students and emerging scholars (Aleah Wong, Astrid Sanchez Jimenez, Liu Yue, Tayler Clarke) participate actively in the design and coordination of the side-event.
